Position Details

Title:  Legal Secretary I
Status:  Regular, Full-time, Exempt
Pay:  $15.72/hour
Closing Date:  October 25th, 2017

Under general supervision of the County Attorney, this position provides entry level legal secretarial and clerical support services to assist county attorneys and other legal staff.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED, training in office administration practices, and one (1) year of office experience.  Previous legal experience preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides entry level legal secretarial and clerical support services to assist county attorneys and other legal staff;
  • Maintains, records and tracks documents to manage case files;
  • Formats, prepares, and proofreads legal documents and pleadings according to established procedures;
  • Inputs data in case management software;
  •  Maintains court calendars and dockets, and arranges hearings and meetings;
  • Handles routine correspondence and schedules appointments;
  • Liaisons between judges, attorneys, court officials, respondents, other agencies and the public;
  • Assists in collecting information and completing forms;
  • Provides communication and coordination of information;
  • Safeguards the confidentiality of information;
  • Provides receptionist services to direct and assist anyone doing business with the office;
  • Assists in managing misdemeanor cases in Justice Court, involuntary mental health commitments, District Court cases, Supreme Court appeals, civil cases, felony cases;
  • Provides legal estate services for County residents who die intestate, including inventorying, liquidating and accounting for all estate items in public administration cases;
  • Occasional local travel for documents and supplies;
  • Occasional local fieldwork for intestate inventories;
  • Coordinates services and communication with victims, family members and witnesses;
  • Assists in ordering supplies and equipment for office;

  • Department procedures, and county policies and procedures;
  • Legal secretarial administrative and clerical practices and procedures;
  • Legal office methods, legal terminology, and drafting legal documents;
  • Word processing and spreadsheet applications;
  • Managing case load systems;
  • Observing and maintaining confidentiality regulations and requirements;
  • Structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

  • Establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, representatives of other departments/agencies and citizens.

Special Requirements

Must be able to move or lift documents and materials weighing up to 30 pounds.  Possible exposure to potentially hazardous substances or conditions when conducting fieldwork.
