People who use a computer mouse for much of their workday have a higher risk of developing hand and wrist problems, according to a new study by Danish researchers.

The Wyandot County Nursing Home in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, is a 100-bed, county-run home which employs 90 workers, 45 of whom are nursing assistants.  The Wyandot facility crafted a program that is similar to voluntary guidelines issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for nursing homes.

35,000,000 laptop computers are to be produced in 2003!  Dependency on the laptop as a primary workstation has been established in all types of office work.  Some large companies are planning complete shifts from desk-top to laptop models.  However, this convenience of portability has lead to a wide range of ergonomic situations.

Ergonomics is not just for office and computer stations.  Service departments can also design safe and comfortable work areas and work habits.

How can employees be sure they are implementing the right solution the first time?

“A simple, systematic process can be used to find the best solution for addressing stressors found in the office work station,” said David Brodie, Director of Training and Education at Ergonomics Center of North Carolina.  Brodie outlines two areas where employers can cut costs and obtain the correct safety solution the first time around.

Though warm summer months usually lead to thoughts of merriment and outdoor activity, employees who work outdoors must be well informed about possible injuries and illnesses related to outdoor exposure.  The risks of Heat-Related Illnesses, Lightning Strikes, and Insect-Borne Diseases such as Lyme Disease and the West Nile Virus all reach their peak during the summer. 

At 4:00 a.m. on a frigid February morning, county employee Jim rolled out of bed got into his snowplow, and down the county roads in Eastern Montana.  As is often the case with snowplow drivers, winter days begin early and end late.

Slips:  Loss of balance caused by too little friction between your feet and the walking surface.  Trips:  Loss of balance caused by interference between your forward motion and some object.  Falls:  Are caused whenever you move too far off your center of  balance.
