Position Title: Road/Bridge Operations Supervisor
Department: Public Works
Pay Rate: $31.78/hour

Under general direction of Public Works Director, this position manages the daily operations of the Road, Bridge and Shop sections of Public Works.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages the daily operations of the Road, Bridge and Shop sections of Public Works Department
  • Organizes, plans and supervises the construction, maintenance and repair of county roads, bridges and maintenance shop
  • Supervises road, bridge and maintenance shop division  employees
  • Directs and inspects the technical details of maintenance construction and repair of roads and bridges
  • Reads and interprets plans
  • Oversees the operation of heavy equipment
  • Maintains work and budgetary records
  • Establishes work priorities
  • Makes staff assignments for construction, maintenance and repair activities
  • Determines, prepares, and prioritizes the budget
  • Authorizes all purchases and expenditures
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications – Experience & Education

Applicants must meet one of the criteria below:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related and three (3) years of experience in road construction, maintenance and repair or similar and two (2) years of supervisory experience
  • Associates degree in Civil Engineering or related and four (4) years of experience in road construction, maintenance and repair or similar and two (2) years of supervisory experience
  • High School diploma and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in road construction, maintenance and repair or similar and two (2) years of supervisory experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of Public Works Department policies and procedures
  • Lewis and Clark County policies and procedures
  • Montana Code Annotated (Title 7, part XIV)
  • Road and bridge maintenance work methods, materials and equipment
  • Safety practices and procedures
  • Civil engineering
  • Laws pertinent to roads, bridges and easements
  • Principles of employee supervision and training
  • Ability to understand and interpret statutes, regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Operate computer systems and related software, including word processing and spreadsheet programs
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Direct, supervise, train, and evaluate – support staff
  • Organize job assignments according to department standards
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, elected officials, developers, and the public

Special Requirements

Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the state of Montana or attain a Montana driver’s license within six (6) months of hire and must be insurable under the County’s liability policies.

Duties are performed in both indoor and outdoor environments where hazards and discomforts are generally controlled and modifiable.  Position performs work in all types of weather in conditions where dust, debris and dirt, cold and snow are encountered.  This position must be able to stand, twist, stoop, reach, and push, pull, move or lift up to 75 pounds on a occasional basis.  Position requires regular contact with fellow employees, the public. engineering firms, elected officials, and vendors.  This position is required to participate in On-Call Rotation which includes nights and weekends and is required to access remote locations.
