I would like to encourage all county officials to consider participating in the NACo High Performance Leadership Academy (HPLA) as they prepare their 2019-2020 budgets. The Professional Development Academy’s curriculum is delivered by successful leaders from a number of different sectors including some of the world’s foremost thought leaders including General Colin Powell and Marshall Goldsmith.

The course material is delivered through a series of video vignettes and reading material accessed through a web-based platform and is concluded each week with a small group discussion on the course material and a live event every Friday to hear from other breakout groups.

The interaction with other participants through breakout group discussions gives participants an opportunity to learn alongside and from county leaders throughout the country. Full engagement with the program requires 4-5 hours per week and is structure to fit into a busy schedule.

The HPLA focuses on essential leadership skills including communication, collaboration, and managing change. I was able to start using the skills and applying the leadership principles I learned right away. I feel this course has made me a much more effective administrator, and I now feel more prepared to help the Commissioners develop long range plans and strategies to address some of the issues facing Carbon County.
