BLM's West-wide Wind Mapping Project Documents Posted & Comments Requested

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is in the process of evaluating wind energy development potential and resource conflicts for development on public lands across 11 western states, excluding Alaska.  The West-wide Wind Mapping Project is a collaborative effort between the BLM and the DOE Argonne National Laboratory and National Renewable Energy Laboratory to generate maps and geospatial data reflecting wind energy resources on the public lands and identify existing land use exclusions and other potential sensitive resources that may affect wind energy development opportunities.  A stakeholder outreach meeting was held in Denver, Colorado on September 16, 2014 to provide an opportunity for input on this effort.

WASHINGTON, DC - As part of the Obama Administration’s commitment to rural communities, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell today announced that about 1,900 local governments around the country are receiving a total of $436.9 million under the 2014 Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) program.

The Bureau of Land Management is requesting public nominations to fill three positions on its national Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board.  Nominations are for a term of three years and are needed to represent the following categories of interest: wild horse and burro research, natural resource management, and public interest (with special knowledge of equine behavior).

WASHINGTON, DC – As part of the Obama Administration’s commitment to rural communities, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced today that more than 1,850 local governments around the Nation are receiving a record total of $393 million under the 2012 Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) program. Being distributed today, the payments are the largest amount ever allocated under the PILT program to compensate counties and local governments for non-taxable Federal land in their jurisdictions.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) are seeking public comment on issues that should be addressed in Environmental Impact Statements (EIS’s) and Supplemental Environmental Impact Statements (SEIS’s) that will evaluate and provide greater sage-grouse conservation measures in land use plans in 10 Western states.   To address requests for additional time to provide comment, the two agencies have extended the public scoping period an additional 45 days and will continue to accept scoping comments through March 23, 2012.
