The Rural Road Safety Network is a part of the NACo Rural Roads Safety project funded through FHWA/Office of Road Safety and conducted in partnership the National Association of County Engineers. The Rural Road Safety Network provides an opportunity for county staff and elected officials to share experiences with their peers related to increasing roadway safety, often through low-cost safety measures, and increasing public awareness of safety issues within the local community and political system.

NACo’s Rural Road Safety Network was kicked off in late 2008 to meet increase awareness of safety issues among county staff and elected officials. Since 2009, the Rural Road Safety Network has been providing information on safety related tools and resources pertinent to counties. These topics included: Road Safety Audits, the Federal Highway Administration’s 9 Safety Countermeasures, new Retro-reflectivity standards, and more.

County elected officials and staff can participate in several ways:

  • Learning about educational offerings, news, and resources related to road safety through NACo’s quarterly County Roads Safety e-Bulletin.
  • Participating in quarterly Rural Road Safety Network conference calls with transportation professionals.
  • Discussing progress toward road safety goals in one-on-one conversations with safety experts and peers.

We invite you or a member of your staff to receive NACo’s County Roads Safety e-Bulletin in order to

  • Pass along upcoming programs and legislative announcements that would be of interest to county elected officials and staff in your state, and
  • Encourage  county elected officials and staff in your state to participate in the Rural Road Safety Network and receive the bulletin themselves.

Email Cindy Wasser (cwasser@naco.org) if you or someone from you staff is interested in receiving the bulletin.
