Position Description
Summary
The Board of Meagher County Commissioners is seeking applicants to fill the position of County Treasurer following the retirement announcement of current office holder, Maura Kusek. Kusek’s official resignation date is June 26, 2025.
The position is an elected office; however, per statute, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) must fill the elected office by appointment. The appointed person will have to run in the 2026 election to remain in office.
Required Qualifications:
Per Montana Code Annotated (MCA) 7-4-2201, A person is eligible for a county office who at the time of election is:
- of the voting age required by the Montana Constitution;
- a citizen of the state; and
- an elector of the county in which the duties of the office are to be exercised.
Role of the County Treasurer:
Under strict statutory regulations, the Meagher County Treasurer has the following authority:
- Custody of Meagher County’s funds.
- Controls the flow of money to and from the County.
- Invests money for both County funds and funds of various taxing districts.
- Prepares and mails annual tax notices and delinquent tax notices.
- Processes tax lien sale redemptions and issuance of deeds.
- Manages the operations of the Motor Vehicle Department.
The County Treasurer is responsible for:
- Preparing and mailing property tax statements to the owner of record.
- Collecting property taxes.
- Disbursing taxes to the taxing authorities (school districts, cities/towns, the county, special districts, etc.).
- Receiving all monies sent to Meagher County.
- Maintaining correct and proper accounting and reporting of all monies.
- Disbursing monies for obligations of the county on the orders of the Board of County Commissioners.
- Investing all monies until they are needed.
- Managing personnel in the office and assuring they are trained in processes and security needed to become proficient.
The Meagher County Treasurer operates by the authority of Montana Code Annotated, Title 7. Activities of the office are directed by the Legislature of the State of Montana through the Statutes.

Applications for this elected office position must be submitted to the Meagher County Human Resource Office. Applications must be submitted by April 7th, 2025. The BOCC will review applications and interviews will be publicly noticed. All applications and the process will be open to the public.
