First of all, thank you for allowing me to serve as your representative on the Human Services & Education Committee at the NACo level.

The Human Services & Education Committee met on March 2nd during the NACo Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.  Our committee had two resolutions dealing with immigration, and the committee recommended that NACo support some form of an immigration reform bill.

Some states rely on immigrants to help in the shortage of their workforce.  The workers have a limited time they are allowed to work on their cards. The resolutions call for a bill for a comprehensive immigration reform.  It is my understanding that these resolutions will be reworked at the NACo board level.

Other discussion centered around our previous resolutions which included Early Childhood Development, the Dream Act, Energy Assistance for Low Income Persons (LIHEAP), and the Older American Act, to name a few.  It was a great conference with many great speakers.

I also had the opportunity to sit in on the meeting at the State Department where we discussed the Keystone Pipeline and coal issues.  We also met with the Department of Interior and discussed issues such as cooperating agencies and multiple issues.
