Scott Miller
Commissioner, Carbon County

Fellow Commissioners,

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Scott Miller. I am in my sixth year as a Carbon County Commissioner and I am a retired Army Sergeant Major with 25 years of service. I am a fourth-generation Montana cowboy who came home after serving 74 months in combat tours across the world and was asked by the citizens of Carbon County to run for commissioner. Since being a commissioner, we have had to deal with two major disasters, a large wildfire on Robertson Draw in 2020 and the 500-year Carbon County Flood of 2023, and I learned just how much effort it takes at the local, state, and federal levels to survive these events. I have enjoyed meeting most of you at MACo conferences, during legislative sessions, and other events across the state, so I look forward to getting to know everybody more.

I would like to announce that I am running for 2nd Vice President of MACo at the upcoming Annual Conference. Growing up around hard-working Montana ranchers and farmers that I called family helped me instill my core values of responsibility, integrity, compassion, and respect. I joined the military, and there I found honor, courage, justice, and humanity. I can promise you that when you speak to me you will find all of these values and probably a few more that are just part of who I am, without me even knowing it. I currently serve on three MACo committees: Community, Economic Development & Labor Committee; Energy Committee; and Tax, Budget & Finance Committee.

The two things that you can count on from me every day are Integrity and Courage. You will always know I speak the truth while living in a world of facts and reality, with everything I do in my life, and not letting emotions control me. I know what it takes to have the courage to do the right thing even when it is unpopular or when nobody is looking, because I have proven myself in the face of life-altering danger and public criticism without faltering.

I have learned to build and develop skills over the last six years that have helped me become a better man, husband, father, and commissioner. I have learned to communicate by just listening to people and then develop a good relationship so we can move forward together to solve issues through de-escalation and wisdom. I have 25 years of leadership training and daily on-the-job experience that involved strategic-level military planning and interaction that affected worldwide relationships with foreign countries.

Being told by a citizen in my county, “I voted for you” has been instrumental to me and one of the two biggest honors of my life. The responsibility of being a Montana County Commissioner is not lost on me, and knowing that I am looked to for help and guidance on a daily basis to make tough and challenging decisions is something I take very seriously. The citizens of Carbon County and the State of Montana look to their commissioners to be their voice and ensure a future for the generations to follow by holding the character of this state together, and we do it with 56 counties working together as a team.

I have always put The United States of America and the State of Montana first with my 31 years of total service, so I can honestly say to you that I will be committed to representing all of you and your counties if you would allow me to do so as your 2nd Vice President of MACo.

I would appreciate your vote in at the Annual Conference in Great Falls.

Respectfully,

Scott Miller,
Carbon County Commissioner
